This behavior (arrow keys triggering list item selection) is present in Windows FE, but the Java FE implementation chose not to follow it through; it has been reported earlier. So there is no way to do it in Java FE.
As a workaround, you may consider using the grid control. Besides the arrow support and other key events, you get additional columns etc as a bonus.
