Still LOL.  

I should say that I'm not after forcing J (or j) into an ironclad,
logical, rational straightjacket.  I recognize that I treat J best as a
natural language.  Just as I don't worry too much about fine points of
grammar (but do get perturbed when the local newspaper writes "there
were a couple cars on the street"), I don't worry too much about the
really fine points here.  I do want to understand J well enough to use
it as a written as well as computational language or notation, though,
and thus my question.  You've all helped me, and I think I understand it
better.  I don't think I could write a summary such as Dan or Henry (or
Roger) could, though.
