Thanks for the guidance. I'd been working in an .ijx window, not an .ijs
window. Yes, now I see the difference you describe. (However, I don't get
the last bit about formatting the script via menu item.)

What I don't understand is why "verb define" supports the special
explicit-definition mode, but other (customized) definitions involving
Define do not. It must be special support coded into the IDE.
