The J-programming group I set up for a few reasons. Some members of c.l.a. objected to J code being posted there. I wanted to have a group where simple examples could be posted. I can also put files on the web there. The group is open for everyone but after having it completely open I started getting spam neither I nor other serious J members wanted. So I closed it so only members can post but anyone can join and/or leave as they want and they can read the messages on the web or get them sent by mail. I also have it closed such that the first message is moderated and if it is from a spammer it is banned but serious members can from then on post freely. It has worked very well so far and there are some good examples there I myself look at once in a while. I do not see the group as a surrogate or competition to the forums.
