In my experience, those automated bug reports to the
vendor only happen when one of their components
fails.

I do not see any reason to question that mechanism here
but of course any unidentified bug has mysterious aspects.

That said, if we do not mind stepping into the world of
speculation, perhaps the current jsoftware policy on treatment
of _. and the design of J7 both have some motivation in
Java's [lack of] support for indeterminate bit patterns?
