Ed - I've had no trouble using ODBC with a DSN connection but was unable to
get it to work without this.  I only tried for a little bit though, and I've
never used DSN-less connections in any other environment.  This might be
handy from a portability standpoint - I'd be interested in any progress you
make on this.
