Oh ... the J engine is in pure C but the front end (JFE) is in Java for Mac and Linux. Another JFE is created for Windows which is an OLE Automation Server.
The JFE is one of the main changes for J7 which I am quite a bit looking forward to. There are 2 main ones coming out which are JHS and the J/GTK ...
