Yes, I imagine so.

I remember when I first started programming in J, I spent
a lot of time thinking about writing "utilities" which were
really just syntactic sugar.  And, after countless hours
I eventually realized that I was not accomplishing anything
useful with them.

I had been trying to solve problems imposed by the
design of other languages and their instructional
materials.
