Personally, I think of this as J putting pressure on you to develop better algorithms. And while some of that pressure has to do with the implementation of J, some of it is a reflection of the underlying character of computer hardware. (Simple inner loops are much more efficient on the processor's cache than complicated inner loops, on modern cpus.)
