Numbers (". with a left argument) does not treat TAB (9{a.) as white space.
If numbers are separated by only tabs, no spaces, then Numbers treats it as
an error. But Do (". with no left argument) treats the tab as white space.
If numbers are separated by both tabs and spaces then Numbers works
