where mv is monadic left rank of v .

But, it seems like this is true for non-negative mv only. E.g.:
   M=. - i. 3 4   NB. any numeric array
   f0=. <@:|"_1   NB. f0 and f1...
   f1=. <@(|"_1)  NB. ...would be equivalent
   f0 M           NB. u applies to items, ok
