OK, I'm confused about what 2!:1 should do, but my application of 2!:x should wait for the sub-process to complete before moving on. To my mind, 2!:3 sounds more like what I'd want in this case, although I think the best solution for gnuplot is to talk to it via a pipe so that you could do animated graphs...
