As regards starting demos, labs and other applications in the gtk ide, I suggest a new menu Tools|Launch... This will be a subheader, with menu entries read from a config file, launch.cfg. Each entry in the config file will be a pair: name;script. On start up, if the script exists, then the name appears in the menu. Selecting the menu just loads the script.
