Yes, thanks! That does get past the value error - but my previous
problems are still there. I did make some little progress in poking
at this.

I can now to the sine plot, it takes noticeably longer (more than 3
times as long) than j602 producing the plot.pdf file. The window is
VERY slow to resize (using 100% of one of the 4 available cores) -
much longer than "zoom" on the pdf plot and making the window bigger.

But - the jconsole session is stuck (the original complaint here).
Looking at running processes I see an instance of jconsole running
outside of terminal and I suppose that is the code producing the
display. Issuing a Quit (or CMD Q) has no effect on anything. Closing
the window displaying the graphic does free the jconsole/terminal
session and that can continue OK - but the "extra jconsole process"
continues with no window. Quitting it doesn't do anything.

If another plot is done, the missing window comes back to life and
(still slowly) paints the new plot - but then the terminal/console
session is dead until the window is closed (again, quitting that
process has no effect). If I force quit the extraneous process, then
the terminal/jconsole session is killed too, and doesn't save it's
readline file (sigh).

I think there is just a little snag somewhere that is causing this
rude behavior. But I haven't dug deep enough into it to speculate
where that might be.
