The J7 supplied function "dir" (from stdlib) behaves differently from the simple version I was using in J6 (dir=: 1!:0@<) - the J7 version does not return directories if used with the left argument "2". I had thought that over-riding "dir_z_" by defining "dir=: 2&dir_z_" would get me the behavior I was used to where the result is a handy five-column array of directory info but, since it fails to include directories, I'll have to revert to my old definition as it's much handier. It's unfortunate to be thwarted in my attempts to clean up my act and use standard, supplied functions where possible but at least the old, simple definition remains compatible.
