Thanks for the answer, Raul.  Things with j701 must be altogether different.

Excel macros of mine have given instructions to j602.  To do this I've
needed in VBA to define and create js as CreateObject("jexeserver").  Then
Excel can issue commands to J in statements like js.Do.  But before creating
the object, one must use the VBA menu Tools/References.  It's all described
in the section "COM, OLE, and OCX" of the User Manual.  The first step is to
run jreg.bat, as described in the Manual section "J OLE Automation Server."
Is all this out-of-date with j701?  What must I do so that Excel will "see"
j701 out there, and appropriate its properties and methods?

If you can't detail this to me, can you point me to the j701 literature?

jreg.bat (and the concept of registering J as a COM server) is
supported in J602 (at least the 32 bit version) but is not supported
in J701.
