i. is equivalent to indexOf with a character argument.

When looking for substrings, you should use (E.i.1:) which has special
code.  http://www.jsoftware.com/help/dictionary/special.htm

That said, I believe that in java an absence of match result is -1
(which is a valid index in J but an invalid index in Java) where in J
an absence of match result is the smallest positive integer which is
not a valid index.
