But that was a brute force implementation, that does too much in the
wrong way.  I wanted to confirm what was happening.

Instead, let's try this:

Warning: I have not tested this extensively.  And I cannot reproduce
your problem.  But, if it works, it should also fix your copy and
paste issues (at the expense of never being able to represent that
invisible space character explicitly).

Anyways, the file to update is ~config/startup.ijs but you need to be
careful because currently if you paste into that file you are likely
to induce spelling errors in your startup.
