The "Short" is from a famous quotation from [Ho51]: the life of man solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short. "[Ho51]" itself is an amusing instance of the Y2K problem<http://www.jsoftware.com/papers/eem/anecdotes.htm#y2k>. Eugene's paper was written in 1987, a time when the conventional Y2K problem was not yet on most people's horizons. The paper was presented at the APL88 conference in Sydney, Australia. It was on the plane ride back from Sydney that Ken and Eugene invented fork<http://keiapl.org/rhui/remember.htm#fork0> .
