At the very least, you should save your result in a variable so you
can go back and inspect it if it displays oddly.  (And see if a.i.TEXT
looks anything like a.i.COPIEDFROMDISPLAY).

That said, the expression you originally posted:
   <@(a.{~?&256)"_1 @ ?&256 ]10
gave me 10 boxes each with a random deal of characters, for a total
sequence of 1381 characters in the ten boxes.
