I started over again; my previous work was barking up the wrong tree.
The problem definitely lies in
search_engine_query_parser._expand_search_patterns. The essential
difficulty is: how to make the behavior work in the three cases we care
about: 0, 1, many. Right now it only works for 0 and many.
