It is desirable to invent some hotkeys that would copy and paste the
currently selected field (be it empty or with content).

Even better, the set of selected fields.

A special bonus for implementing the numerical prefix argument to the paste
operation that would govern how many times the field should be pasted.
(Think of Emacs's C-u.) This would allow us to easily copy 1 empty author
field and paste it 234 times.

At the end of editing, before the record is sent to the upload queue, we
should be careful not to create dupes, so a simple field deduper should be
run in order to take away identical fields.
(Well, the copy and paste operation could probably be deactivated from the
start for some system-important fields such as 001, but if we run
systematically the field deduper at the end, then this is not needed.)
