output:
Internet explorer cannot download ABC from XYZ
Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site
is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later.
Of course trying later will not help ;-)
This happens when the Excel output is fetched by writing _of=excel_ in the
URL bar. This does not happen when user select "Excel" output format and
click "Search", or when a link to this output is visited...
Internet Explorer has a long history of similar problems...

Asked by Directorate Offices to be able to print a lanscape view of the
results of queries.
The paper is used at the top of folders to summarize all documents in the
folder.
A tab or semicolon separation of the fields should provide the input to
Excel.

A possible addition is to let users select the fields they want to feature in
the Excel output, by means of the 'ot' parameter of the search API.
Eg:
http://cdsweb.cern.ch/search?c=Books&ot=245&ot=100&ot=020&of=excel
Main problem: 'ot' parameter does not originally consider indicators and
subcode, making difficult to create the columns of the Excel output in a
consistent way for all records.

The Excel output is implemented and operational on cdsweb.
It is done using an HTML table, served with ms-excel content-type.
The set of fields displayed in the Excel output should be defined when
migrating cdsadm.
