I found this nice project called LibX (http://www.libx.org/). It's a
framework for libraries, that can be customized to support any library and
that integrate the library in the Firefox and IE and customize pages results
of Google and friend.

Just as pointer I think it worth at the same time supporting current
incarnation of z39.50 protocol, i.e. SRU (http://www.loc.gov/standards/sru/)

After a brief analysis of the package it appears that CDS need to support at
least the OpenURL (z39.88-2004) protocol.
