Hi,
That reminds me of a discussion I had once with Tibor concerning a
future requirement of our server http://doc.rero.ch/
The idea is to set up a filter that, when activated by the user,
allows him/her to search and navigate only pure scholarly content
(articles, thesis, dissertations...), hiding other kinds of content
(namely heritage material such as digitized books, journals, images,
etc.). Ideally the selection criterion for the filter would be
configurable and based on information contained in the metadata (such
as a "985__a: SCHOLARLY" or whatever), and not necessarily associated
with existing collections.
So, in order to implement this feature, why not simply define a
"Scholarly material" collection and let the user "Narrow by" it?
Because currently that only works for the initial search operation;
the "Narrow by" restriction is lost during navigation and further
searches, as mentioned by Ferran. So I think our needs converge here.
It would be nice if the user could manually disable the filter at
will. But it is also important, in that case, to provide a clear
indication somewhere in the interface while the filter is active, in
order to avoid confusion.
At the time of our discussion (that was already 2-3 years ago) Tibor
was able to draft a technical solution for that on-the-fly, but I
cannot recall the details of it. (Does that ring a bell, Tibor?)
By the way, this is a somewhat old requirement on our side but it is
still valid. If a solution can be found that suits several
installations, then it would be great.
Regards,
Miguel

Hi all,
I have been thinking on a search option, easy to implement, that could
benefit a lot current Invenio sites.
As you know, you can start searching an Invenio site at any
collection,
and the first search is effectively restricted to this collection.
But
as soon as you start clicking hiperlinks, the searches are no longer
restricted to this original collection. The current software
allows, of
course, to restrict afterwards those searches to any collection via
the
pulldown menu of the list of all collections, but in many
installations
this list is quite long, and not practical to do more than once or
twice. Adding a '&c=mycollection' to the url is sometimes faster, but
we cannot expect to do that to everybody. And indeed, there are cases
that creating such an isolated view of the site is useful and
desirable.
The solution I've come up with is to add a checkbox next to the search
field with the text 'Restrict further searches to this collection' or
similar. If checked the collection name would be 'sticky' until
unchecked again.
I think that it would be relatively easy to implement.
Unfortunately, I
cannot do much of it now, except of asking your opinion about it.
What do you think?
Thanks,
Ferran
