arXiv Senior Administrator/Project Associate II-16516

Description

Working within Cornell University Library's Digital Scholarship and
Preservation Services unit, the arXix Senior Administrator is responsible for
overseeing and managing daily activities associated with the administration of
arXiv.org<http://arXiv.org>.

Cornell University Library's Digital Scholarship and Preservation Services unit
(CUL-DSPS) facilitates partnerships to promote and assess the role of
information and communication technologies in enhancing scholarly
communication, research, teaching, and collaboration. CUL-DSPS is responsible
for the administration of arXiv.org<http://arXiv.org>, Project Euclid,
Cornell's institutional repository eCommons, and the CUL Archival Repository
(CULAR), a preservation focused repository currently under development.

The arXiv.org<http://arXiv.org> e-print repository has transformed scholarly
communication in physics, computer science, mathematics, and other scientific
communities. Begun in 1991 and operated by Cornell University Library (CUL)
since 2001, arXiv is intensively used by researchers worldwide, currently
receiving over 6,000 submissions per month and approximately 750,000 download
requests per week.

The arXiv Senior Administrator (SA) will be responsible for overseeing arXiv's
moderation, administration, and user-support processes. Responsibilities
include: help to ensure the appropriateness of submissions and the quality
standards of arXiv; make moderation decisions based on arXiv policy and the
specifics of any particular case; facilitate discussion of moderation questions
or policy with subject experts; investigate appeals from users regarding
moderation decisions; respond to all users and moderators in a timely and
courteous fashion; liaise with subject advisory committees and recruit
moderators when necessary; perform daily arXiv administration tasks and
user-support activities as needed; provide oversight and support of the daily
arXiv administration process and its administrators. The SA will ensure that
arXiv administrative processes and procedures follow arXiv policy, and that
policy is applied consistently and fairly; he/she will recognize gaps in arXiv
policy, and initiate new policy development with others when needed, keeping
policy up-to-date and in sync with arXiv's evolving governance model.

The operation of arXiv.org<http://arXiv.org> is a team-based effort and
coordination among team members is critical. The Senior Administrator will work
closely with other staff to meet arXiv's service obligations, many of which
have routine daily or weekly deadlines. The SA will contribute to arXiv's
developing sustainability model, providing input and statistics to inform that
discussion. The SA will work closely with CUL Information Technologies staff to
refine workflows and the arXiv software that supports them, in order to improve
the efficiency of arXiv operation and administration.

This is a three-year appointment with the possibility of renewal. The preferred
