arXiv Senior Administrator/Project Associate II-16516 Description Working within Cornell University Library's Digital Scholarship and Preservation Services unit, the arXix Senior Administrator is responsible for overseeing and managing daily activities associated with the administration of arXiv.org<http://arXiv.org>. Cornell University Library's Digital Scholarship and Preservation Services unit (CUL-DSPS) facilitates partnerships to promote and assess the role of information and communication technologies in enhancing scholarly communication, research, teaching, and collaboration. CUL-DSPS is responsible for the administration of arXiv.org<http://arXiv.org>, Project Euclid, Cornell's institutional repository eCommons, and the CUL Archival Repository (CULAR), a preservation focused repository currently under development. The arXiv.org<http://arXiv.org> e-print repository has transformed scholarly communication in physics, computer science, mathematics, and other scientific communities. Begun in 1991 and operated by Cornell University Library (CUL) since 2001, arXiv is intensively used by researchers worldwide, currently receiving over 6,000 submissions per month and approximately 750,000 download requests per week. The arXiv Senior Administrator (SA) will be responsible for overseeing arXiv's moderation, administration, and user-support processes. Responsibilities include: help to ensure the appropriateness of submissions and the quality standards of arXiv; make moderation decisions based on arXiv policy and the specifics of any particular case; facilitate discussion of moderation questions or policy with subject experts; investigate appeals from users regarding moderation decisions; respond to all users and moderators in a timely and courteous fashion; liaise with subject advisory committees and recruit moderators when necessary; perform daily arXiv administration tasks and user-support activities as needed; provide oversight and support of the daily arXiv administration process and its administrators. The SA will ensure that arXiv administrative processes and procedures follow arXiv policy, and that policy is applied consistently and fairly; he/she will recognize gaps in arXiv policy, and initiate new policy development with others when needed, keeping policy up-to-date and in sync with arXiv's evolving governance model. The operation of arXiv.org<http://arXiv.org> is a team-based effort and coordination among team members is critical. The Senior Administrator will work closely with other staff to meet arXiv's service obligations, many of which have routine daily or weekly deadlines. The SA will contribute to arXiv's developing sustainability model, providing input and statistics to inform that discussion. The SA will work closely with CUL Information Technologies staff to refine workflows and the arXiv software that supports them, in order to improve the efficiency of arXiv operation and administration. This is a three-year appointment with the possibility of renewal. The preferred appointment is full-time, but we will consider qualified applicants interested in a part-time appointment that would share some of these duties. Qualifications Master's or doctorate degree and research experience in a physical science, engineering, computer science, mathematics, or information science. Demonstrated understanding of research communication in a relevant discipline. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written. A people- and service-orientation and attitude. Proven ability to work productively in a supportive role with colleagues and in a team environment, yet also self-motivated and possessing good independent decision making abilities Excellent trouble-shooting and problem-solving skills, as demonstrated by previous job experience. Able to work effectively and comfortably in a changing environment and with conflicting demands. Able to handle complex situations and to apply negotiation and diplomacy skills. Able to work under pressure and to meet deadlines. Detail oriented with good record-keeping skills and documentation habits. Flexible schedule required as Senior Administrator must share coverage of arXiv administration over holidays, in exchange for compensatory leave time. Preferred: Experience with scripting and programming (particularly Perl, Unix shell, and SQL) and web development (HTML, XML) very helpful. Experience with end-user technical support (such as help desk) or in a library public-service position a plus. Experience with technical documentation or help function development helpful. Knowledge and experience with TeX/LaTeX desirable. Experience in policy development useful. Professional experience in a research library setting a plus. Background check may be required.
