This is exactly what is possible with citedby/refersto search operators,
e.g. try to run on INSPIRE:

   refersto:refersto:refersto:author:moi

which finds papers that cite papers that cite papers that cite papers
written by Moi.

Not that much, in the non-dedicated index variant, so the deployment
should be relatively straightforward.  See e.g. the initial commit
behind citedby/refersto search operators:
