Dear Stefan,

CERN uses the Micala software to process the recorded talks and create
"WebLecture" objects. These WebLectures can live independently of
Invenio: in our case, the CERN Document Server (powered by
Invenio) is just embedding the WebLecture (currently a .swf file)
in the detailed view, without much processing. All the magic
happens inside the WebLecture object.

Not only the WebLecture are stored on a "regular", non-Invenio,
web server, but the creation of the WebLectures also happens on a
different server running Micala software.

The URLs ("http://mediaarchive.cern.ch/";) in the metadata are
indeed used to refer to the location of the WebLecture object. We
also use them to provide additional features such that HTML5
video fallback in some cases, or display of a thumbnail in the
brief format. Theoretically you might need just the URL to the
.swf object or a way to resolve its location.

The Micala software installation/development at CERN is handled
by some people who are not on this mailing list. I am cc'ing them
so that they could provide additional information if needed.

You can find more information about the Micala project at
<http://micala.sourceforge.net/>

It is also interesting to note that Indico software offers some
integration with Micala to help with the recording of the
lectures.

It might be an overkill, but it would be interesting that we
study the feasibility of running Micala as a standard Invenio
task in BibSched, so that it would be easy for Invenio admins to
process such WebLectures. Using the multi-nodes capability of
BibSched introduced recently for supporting videos conversion
within Invenio, it might become practically feasible to run such
processing on an Invenio "cluster".
Concerning the "storage" part, it would not be a problem to
simply attach the WebLecture file to the Invenio record. Still,
note that in the setup at CERN we additionally use Flash streaming
servers to stream these videos, instead of progressive download.

Best regards
