A very short story would be:
Invenio uses Marc21, DSpace Dublin Core.
Comparing both formats reveals some limitations of DSpace (and in fact
most repository software products) you'd hardly be able to overcome. At
least it is not easy to do it in a clean way. Some things get very
inflexible due to this "simple" limitation. (Just one pointer: try
authority controlled texts for arbitrary fields in DSpace.)
As Ferran pointed out: invenio is much more flexible in any area. Funny
enough it's not more complex, I think. (At least not compared to DSpace.)
To give you an impression you could check out a talk I gave at the
OA-Tage in Vienna last week, presenting our ongoing project.
Unfortunately, due to the audience, the slides are in German, but maybe
it's of some help anyway, I added a lot of screenshots form our

Yes, at the moment they (still) lives on a DSpace (in migration ;)
DSpace seems to be a good tool, given 1000+ institutions are using it.
