Out of curiosity, I wanted to find how many PMP certified professionals are there....and below are my findings and resulting deductions...
In 2013, there were a total of more than 540,000 PMPs, worldwide and across industries. More than 48000 PMPs were certified in 2013...thats more than 4000 every month! So with such large number of PMPs out there, does it mean the PMP certification is losing its value? On the contrary, I believe the PMP is fast becoming...to quote Herzberg's 2-factor theory...a hygiene factor. Organizations prefer you to be PMP certified, because it gives them a reassurance that you have a solid grounding in the principals of project management, in addition to actually having managed projects. By not having a PMP...you can try to convince the organization of your project management skills and knowledge. So the answer is....yes, if you are a PM or a functional manager wanting to learn more about project management, a PMP is a necessity.....a hygiene factor.
