JOB DESCRIPTION
We are a team of Engineers within the Database Operations team with heavy
focus on “Operations as Code”. We are in search of a Senior DB2 LUW
(Distributed) Database Engineer with proven experience, aptitude towards
Continuous Improvement and with a strong desire to challenge status-quo of
IT operations.
The Engineer will be part of Enterprise Database Operations team that has
accountability for Incident Management, Problem Management, Database
Performance Optimization, tuning, vulnerability management, patching, Audit
remediation, Operational Risk reduction, Configuration and Drift
Management, lifecycle management, operational automation (codify/automation
BAU activities), Change planning and execution among others.
The Engineer is expected to excel at teamwork while being a Subject Matter
Expert (SME) and extremely reliable Individual Contributor. The Engineer
will have ongoing partnership with multiple teams including offshore L1/L2
Database Operations, L3 Database Engineering and Application (internal IT
customers) teams. The Engineer will be expected to embrace and implement
ideas like “Automate this year’s job away”, “Empower L1/L2 teams to be
self-sufficient and independent”, “write robust code to reduce Toil for
reducing operational risk and for work/life balance”, “Identify
opportunities in every Incident”.
The Engineer is expected to excel in interactions with IT leadership and
senior engineering teams - both internal and external (vendor). For this
Engineer to be effective, strong technical skills and extremely effective
communication (both written and verbal) are critical. Exposure to at least
one additional RDBMS (preferably PostgreSQL) is preferred. Prior experience
as Lead Engineer and ability to articulate ideas extremely well, back up
ideas with data and clearly demonstrate ROI is required.
What you bring to the table:
• 10+ years of experience as DB2 LUW (Distributed) Operations Engineer
role; Performance tuning, troubleshooting and problem determination skills
• Exposure and working knowledge of AIX HACMP, DB2 LUW (Distributed) HADR,
UNIX environments including AIX and RHEL
• Excellent UNIX/Linux Shell scripting, database design, implementation
skills
• Design and development skills – PL/SQL, Stored Procedures, Packages,
Triggers
• Compliance and deep appreciation of Change Management discipline as it
pertains to rolling out Changes in various environments
• Ability to work independently and in a team environment as a member of
cross-functional teams in a fast-paced Agile environment
• Passionate about data and for delivering high-quality data solutions in
an agile fashion
• Excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills, coupled with a
desire to take on responsibilities
• Experience writing good documentation - detailed design, functional
specifications, or technical requirements
• Track record of being detailed oriented, self-starter and deliverables
with minimal defects
• Must be solutions-oriented, a critical thinker and an excellent
communicator – both written and verbal communication
• Must be able to communicate technically and non-technically, tailoring
communication to audience
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; Ability to quickly grasp
complex concepts and learn new technologies
• Proficiency with Unix/Linux Shell scripting (Korn Shell (KSH), BASH,
etc.) and experience with job scheduling systems
• Participate in on-call rotation as the Engineer is expected to provide
24/7 support in a team rotation basis
• Ability to streamline and organize documentation, share knowledge, ideas,
and concepts with the team, collaborate and truly believe in the concept of
teamwork
• Willingness to effectively manage multiple, competing, high-priority
projects with varying deadlines and be able to work under pressure during
production issues
Nice to have:
• Strong database development skills gained through hands on experience
working with relational databases
• Coding experience in Python and/or Infrastructure as Code - Ansible,
Terraform
• Experience working in Agile teams
• System Administration including AIX, RHEL internals
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology,
Engineering, or a related field preferred
• Prior experience and understanding of Operational Risk within the
financial industry

In Addition:

1. DB2 LUW Architecture
1. Need to be able to describe how DB2 LUW works.  Should understand and be
able to describe the key background processes and logs and how a DBA
typically interacts with them
2. HADR and TSA
1. Need to have hands-on experience in an environment with HADR and be able
to articulate different modes within HADR.  They need to be confident in
every aspect from initial build to monitoring to DR support
3. Troubleshooting
1. Should have hands-on experience troubleshooting DB2 LUW environment -
including production incident support
4. Unix - AIX and RHEL
1. Need to have worked in and be comfortable in a UNIX environment,
including advanced scripting
5. Team Lead skills
1. Highly preferred to have proven skills to provide technical leadership
to L3, L2 and L1 engineers along with managing their workloads on a regular
basis
