It's still not crystal clear to me. Right now Sun is GPL'ing a compiler (javac) and a VM (hotspot), both of them already having quite fine free implementations (gcj, kaffe, etc.). The war is mainly on the framework (JDK), where GNU Classpath has always been lagging.

The article says that a part of Sun's JDK will be GPL'ed in 2007: that would be the real step forward for Sun. I suggest to wait for the official "JDK freedom day", then offer support by hosting Java projects, especially those that would fill the gap of "the few encumbered [proprietary] modules"...
