When the backup was interrupted for a few weeks, the next new backup
didn't benefit from hardlinking.  Old backups may be taking too much
space.

However, when I estimated the extra space, I came to the conclusion
that the allocated space was enough to store 2 backup sets, so maybe
something else happened?

In doubt, ditch oldish backup and check if the available space is on
par with what it was 3 months ago.
