Of-course I use mozdev for xpi hosting and also another place (00freehost.com) but that is beside the point, because people who download my extension from mozilla.org cannot get the updates from anywhere but mozilla.org since we cannot provide external URLs for updates any longer. Thus only a few people, who download from outside of mozilla.org enjoy uptodate code.

You need to provide your own hosting of the XPI (even if it's on
mozdev.org instead of a personal domain) in order to provide your users
with the latest version. UMO is always one or more versions behind on
my extension for the reasons you pointed out, but my users don't have
to suffer for it.
