Yes, with templates.
You asked if I use IDs on my trees. If you mean
the id attribute, yes, they all have id attributes with unique values.
This is one example that works for me:
<treecol id="Name" label="&title.label;" primary="true" flex="3"
persist="width hidden"/>
Maybe you need primary="true"? Do you have that?
I didn't know about tree observers. Clearly that is the way to go if I
am forced to implement this myself.
