In general, I would agree with that. In most cases clients don't have a
very strong idea of what they actually want and just end up with
something that doesn't fit their users very well.
Do you think other redesigns in the Mozilla community have gone poorly

Yes, at least if that is what you get from a "professional design firm"
because I can assure you that the used color for text is hard, if not
impossible to read for a large group of people.
Not to mention text like:
"Can a browser really make the Web better?
Try Firefox and see for yourself. Learn more."
because there is not a single browser that can make the web 'better'.
In fact you sometimes /have/ to visit certain web sites with MSIE simply
because they don't work with Firefox (so much for making the web better).
