'I'll go to church no matter what'

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has ordered
security tightened ahead of the Christmas and New
Year's holidays, following attacks on two churches in
Palu, Central Sulawesi, and the recent discovery of
crude bombs on a bus in Bandung. The Jakarta Post
asked residents if the security warnings affected
their holiday plans.
ADVENT TAMBUN, 30, teaches at the Spanish cultural
center at Trisakti University in West Jakarta. He
lives in Meruya Ilir, West Jakarta:
I don't care about the bomb threats. I don't think it
will happen again. I think the bombing at the
Australian Embassy in Kuningan, South Jakarta, was the
last of its kind.
I also doubt the homemade bombs found aboard a bus in
Bandung were going to be used to target church
congregations during Christmas services. I will not
take any special measures or avoid going to church to
celebrate the special day.
I don't have any plans to go out of town for the
holidays. I don't have any plan to go home to Medan,
North Sumatra, since I just went home during Idul
Fitri. Besides, going home just means spending a lot
of money for transportation, right?
HERI SISWANTO, 34, is a lecturer at a private
university on Jl. TB Simatupang in South Jakarta. He
lives with his family in Cilandak, South Jakarta:
I am not afraid at all. I have no reason to be scared
of going to church. Terrorists choose their targets at
random. It could happen anywhere, at anytime to
anyone. Nowhere in the city is immune to such an
attack. Perhaps it's just a matter of luck. If you are
unlucky, you might become a victim.
The possibility of bombings does not affect my
day-to-day activities. I'll go to the church closest
to my house. I won't try and pick a church with
tighter security, for instance, to try and keep
something bad from happening to me.

'Christmas is a joyous time'

Shopping centers and malls in the city are becoming
increasingly crowded ahead of Christmas, as residents
defy the terror threats to get their holiday shopping
done. The Jakarta Post asked residents if the terror
threats would affect their holiday plans.
ELVIS, 28, sells used clothes in Senen market, Central
Jakarta. He lives with his aunt in Depok:
I don't understand how some people can attack others.
All I want to do is sell my clothes and celebrate
Christmas in peace.
Of course, whenever I go to church I worry about the
bombing threats. But my belief that God will protect
His home comforts me. What worries me more is that
these attacks can happen anywhere.
Anyway, I will still go to church and celebrate
Christmas without fear. I discussed it with my aunt
and we came to the conclusion that there is no point
in being afraid because Christmas time is supposed to
be a time of happiness.
I plan to get married after Christmas, so hopefully
nothing serious will happen before that day.
YANTO, 26, is an officer at National Police
Headquarters in South Jakarta. He lives with his wife
in Cibubur, East Jakarta:
I cannot spend much time with my wife during Christmas
because I have to help guard public places. I get time
off on Dec. 25, but only to attend church.
As a police officer, I am prepared to follow orders to
protect people from bomb threats. I am very proud to
show my loyalty and service to the public and my
country.
Concerning police preparations, we are ready to
prevent bombings and I believe Christmas will be
peaceful.
What annoys me is that my wife is pregnant with our
first child and I want to spend more time with her. We
expect the baby to be born in about two months.

'I will stay home on Christmas Day'

Over the past four years, Christmas celebrations have
been haunted by terror threats following several bombs
in major cities in 2000. Jakarta Police have deployed
around 15,000 officers to safeguard the capital for
Christmas. The Jakarta Post talked to some residents
on their plans to celebrate Christmas and how the
terror threats would affect their holiday plans.
Adj. Sr. Comr. PETRUS GOLOSE, the city police cyber
crime division chief. He lives with his family in
Pejaten, South Jakarta:
Nothing is particularly special about this year's
Christmas, except that it has been 2004 years since
Jesus Christ was born. As an officer, I will not be
taking any holiday except for Dec. 25 that I shall
spend with my family.
I will go to my church along with my family, of
course. But I haven't decided when we will go to the
service; it could be on Christmas Eve or maybe on
Christmas morning.
My family doesn't plan to have a party to celebrate
Christmas.
BETRIX, 25, is an urban issue's activist . He lives
with his family in South Jakarta:
I don't celebrate Christmas and I'm not taking a long
holiday either, except for Christmas Day. I have to
leave town on Dec. 26 to work.
As a citizen, I have been very worried about the
travel warnings that have been issued by several
foreign governments. I have decided not to go to malls
and will just stay home during Christmas Day to avoid
anything bad that might happening.
Frankly, I don't trust the police or the military. I
don't think their intelligence could prevent bombings
despite travel warnings.
I have learned from the Christmas bombings in 2000.
The military and the police had received warnings
about the bombings from foreign governments, but they
didn't pay much attention (to these warnings). And
then, boom!
