Police plane crash kills 15 in Indonesia February 22, 2005 - 2:39PM A police transport plane has crashed into the sea while trying to land in the eastern Indonesian province of Papua, killing 15 people and injuring three. The CASA 212 Aviocar was carrying 14 passengers and four crew members when it went down while approaching the airfield, national police spokesman Brigadier General Soenarko Danuarwanto said. Four police officers including the pilot were killed and the other 11 fatalities were civilian passengers, he said. Witnesses said one of the plane's engines failed during its approach to the airport, located some 250km north-east of Jayapura, the provincial capital of Papua. The aircraft was en route from the town of Sentani, near Jayapura. The Spanish-built Aviocar is a light, twin-turboprop transport plane widely used by developing countries in a variety of roles including fisheries patrol and maritime rescue.
