Arab bukan negara sebagai contoh bagi kita-kita. ______________________ Brief on AHDR Series "The Arab Human Development Reports series represents an effort to crystallize a strategic vision of change, developed by Arabs�. to deepen an Arab-owned and Arab-led dialogue on ways to safeguard the dignity and well-being of the Arab people. There can be no doubt that self-reform stemming from open, scrupulous and balanced self-criticism is the right, if not the only alternative to plans that have apparently been drawn up outside the Arab world for restructuring the region and for reshaping its identity" Dr. Rima Khalaf Hunaidi. The first Arab Human Development Report (AHDR) was published in 2002, principally as a critique of, and a charter for, development processes relevant both at the regional and country levels. The AHDR, and its evolution into a series, provides the Arab region, with a needed neutral forum for initiating dialogues and structuring debates to build a reform agenda from within. It builds on the wealth of Arab knowledge and insight, to offer new tools and indexes to measure progress and deficits beyond basic needs; and it brings together independent and solid analyses targeted to people-centered development, and the mobilization of one of the Arab world's most precious resources: human capital. The concept of these reports arose from two powerful observations: the first is that development in the Arab world must flow from within. The second is that situated in contemporary global dynamics, and rooted in our economic, cultural and social context, sporadic improvements in one country are not sufficient to assure lasting peace and prosperity in the region. Indeed, while desirable and necessary, such advances are significantly enhanced and rendered sustainable, precisely when they are buttressed by, mirrored in, and improved within other countries in the region. The Reports present a vision of self-determined change based on internal social reform and scrupulous self-critique.
