Indonesian navy launches anti-piracy operation in Malacca Strait 07.12.2005, 03:27 AM
JAKARTA (AFX) - The Indonesian navy launched a three-month operation in the Malacca Strait to curb piracy in the key international shipping route, navy spokesman Major Kadir said. The operation, named 'Gurita' (Octopus), will involve 20 navy warships, seven motorboats, four planes and two helicopters, Kadir said. It will also involve marine and infantry battalions, four teams of navy frogmen, three teams of amphibious scouts and an intelligence team, he said. It will cover the Malacca Strait and the Strait of Singapore. Kadir said the operation is part of efforts by the states bordering the Malacca Strait -- Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore -- to secure the waterway. The London-based Lloyd's Market Association's Joint War Committee in June reportedly added the Malacca Strait to 20 other areas, including Iraq, Lebanon and Nigera, deemed a security threat to shipping. bs/br/net http://www.forbes.com/markets/feeds/afx/2005/07/12/afx2133093.html Post message: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subscribe : [EMAIL PROTECTED] Unsubscribe : [EMAIL PROTECTED] List owner : [EMAIL PROTECTED] Homepage : http://proletar.8m.com/ Yahoo!
