A video on Arab television showing a man with an Australian accent
threatening terrorist attacks was evidence that al-Qaeda's reach
extended to many nations, the broadcaster said last night.

Wearing military combat gear and carrying an automatic rifle, his face
covered by a balaclava, the militant attributes the attack to
al-Qaeda.

"The honourable sons of Islam will not just let you kill our families
in Palestine, Afghanistan, Kashmir and the Balkans, Indonesia, the
Caucasus and elsewhere," the militant says on the tape. "It is time
for us to be equals. As you kill us, you'll be killed. As you bomb us,
you will be bombed."

Several linguists said a number of different "markers" identified the
accent of the militant as Australian. One said the man was born, or
spent his formative years, in Australia and was probably under 30.

Dr Felicity Cox, of Macquarie University, said the man's speech showed
Arabic or Middle Eastern influence, but this might mean only that he
had spent time with people of such backgrounds. "This guy exhibits
signs that he has spent a considerable amount of time in Australia,"
Dr Cox said.

In Kabul, private security experts who viewed the tape speculated that
the man's handling of the firearm indicated he might have had Western
weapons training.
