Applying Sharia penalties not suitable for Egypt at the moment: former Jihadist
Applying Sharia (Islamic law) in Egypt might be difficult, owing to the
circumstances through which the country is passing through. (Reuters)

Prominent leader in the formerly Jihadist group al-Jamaa al-Islamiya Najeh
Ibrahim said it is difficult to apply penalties according to Sharia (Islamic
law), known as "hudoud" in Arabic, in Egypt owing to the circumstances through
which the country is passing through. "What Egyptian people need now is social
justice and basic freedoms before anything else," he said in a phone interview
with the Egyptian al-Nahar private TV. It is also important, Ibrahim added, to
solve pressing problems from which Egyptians are suffering such as poverty.

"When all social ailments are properly treated, the application of the `hudoud'
would be possible."

Nageh explained that the possibility of applying `hudoud', imposed on
perpetrators of serious crimes like murder, theft and adultery, is always
linked to the nature of the society in which they are applied.

"The society has to be ready for the application of such laws. Otherwise, it
will be a flawed decision."

Ibrahim pointed out that many prohibitions in Islam were done gradually in
order to prepare society for them and to make sure they are properly applied.

"This, for example, was what happened with alcohol and theft and this is how
any law should be applied in any country."
