Dwi Pranoto, head of Bali and West Nusa Tenggara office of BI, told reporters during the recent fast breaking gathering that many irresponsible parties would reap benefits from long holiday seasons when cash transactions were expected to increase dramatically. “In Bali, the Idul Fitri holiday will be followed by a two-week long Galungan and Kuningan religious fiesta. People will likely spend quite a lot of cash on preparing for big events,” Pranoto said. During the January-June period of this year, BI’s Bali office found the circulation of 1,386 instances of fake money in circulation, valued at about Rp 129.21 million (US$13,696.26) in nominations of Rp 100,000 (around 88.1 percent) and Rp 50,000 (9.2 percent). “The bogus money was usually used during transactions at traditional markets, small retailers and kiosks. Most of these places do not have fake money detectors, therefore people can easily buy goods using bogus money,” Pranoto. To anticipate the increasing demand for cash money, BI has already prepared Rp 3.5 trillion in cash, comprising of Rp 3.3 trillion in nominations of Rp 100,000; Rp 50,000 and Rp 20,000. The bank also provides Rp 200 billion in smaller nominations of Rp 10,000, Rp 5,000, Rp 2,000 and Rp 1,000 as well as small change. “The bank has anticipated all possible demands for cash. BI has prepared Rp 2.52 trillion in money between July and August during this holiday season,” Pranoto said. Since 2011, BI has also collaborated with 44 national banks and 13 community banks — Bank Perkreditan Rakyat (BPR) — in distributing the cash to local residents. A number of mobile banks will also provide services for people to change their money. All services will run until Aug. 16.
