Time is GMT + 8 hours Posted: 01 October 2005 2356 hrs Only Jemaah Islamiyah could have mounted Bali blasts: expert JAKARTA : Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), the group immediately suspected of responsibility for Saturday's deadly bombings in Bali, dreams of creating a pan-Islamic state in Southeast Asia and is thought linked to the al-Qaeda network. Only JI is capable of mounting the sort of bombings that rocked the Indonesian resort island of Bali Saturday, Rohan Gunaratna, head of terrorism research at Singapore's Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies, told AFP. "The only group that has the intention and capability to mount a coordinated and simultaneous attack against a western target in Indonesia is Jemaah Islamiyah," he said. Experts say the group aims to destabilise the region and bring Indonesia, Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore and the southern Philippines under a fundamentalist Islamic umbrella. Elderly Indonesian cleric Abu Bakar Bashir, JI's alleged spiritual leader or "emir", was sentenced in March to 30 months in prison for his involvement in a criminal conspiracy that led to the October 2002 nightclub bombings which killed 202 people and for which JI was blamed. He was cleared of more serious charges of planning terrorist attacks. Dozens of alleged JI members have been rounded up since the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States and are behind bars in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia and the Philippines. But analysts have warned that many of JI's most dangerous militants and bomb-makers are still on the run, including among them two of the key bombers accused of being behind the 2002 Bali attacks, Malaysians Azahari Husin and Noordin Mohammad Top. According to the indictment at his trial in Jakarta, Bashir co-founded Jemaah Islamiyah (Islamic community) in Malaysia in 1993 with Abdullah Sungkar and assumed leadership when Sungkar died of natural causes in 1999. JI has been strongly linked to the network of Osama bin Laden - who Bashir has lauded as a "true Muslim fighter" - and has often been described by analysts as al-Qaeda's Southeast Asian proxy. It has a network of supporters across Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and the southern Philippines and has reached out to Muslim organisations in Thailand and Myanmar. In Indonesia JI has staged more than 50 bombings or attempted bombings since April 1999 including the Bali blasts. These included bombings on Christmas Eve 2000 of 38 churches or priests which killed 19 people. Before Bali, the group said in its study, the bombings appeared to have been revenge for massacres of Muslims by Christians in the Maluku islands and Poso. But the US-led war on terror now appeared to have become the main focus. The targeting in Bali of westerners rather than Indonesian Christians "may be indicative of that shift." - AFP/ls/de http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp_asiapacific/view/171277/1/.html ------------------------ Yahoo!
