Tabari menulis saat melakukan sumpah Aqaba, al-Abbas dan Ubadah bin Nadlah berkata bahwa sumpah setia pada Muhammad merupakan pernyataan perang terhadap dunia. Tak lama setelah sumpah kedua Aqaba, Allah merestui pernyataan perang terhadap orang2 yang tak percaya, pertama di ayat 22:40-42 dan lalu di ayat 2:198. (Tabari, vol. vi, p.134)
