Darimana Australia diuntungkan?

Berita berikut mulai terkuak setelah koran Bali mulai membocorkan
berita bahwa putra Bakrie terlibat. Awal-awalnya juru bicara Bakrie
membantah, tapi akhirnya mengakui bahwa mungkin Anindya Bakrie
mengenal Leslie. Jadi bau-bau permainan tingkat atas sudah bisa
tercium.

Agony and the…money

Revelations about Michelle Leslie's drug conviction could expose the
dirty laundry of Indonesia's elite, writes Mark Forbes.

WALKING out the doors of Bali's Kerobokan jail a beaming Michelle
Leslie believed she was heading towards relaxation and longed-for
reunions with friends and loved ones.

The media posse that surrounded her on Saturday - then staged a car
chase through Denpasar and a two-hour stand-off with Indonesian
immigration officials insisting on her deportation - showed she would
not escape the controversy that has surrounded her charge of ecstasy
possession. Even the informal attire of the sometime lingerie model -
who took to wearing a Muslim hijab head covering during her ordeal -
provoked front-page headlines.

The case has divided Leslie's lawyers, supporters and friends. It now
threatens to air the dirty laundry of Indonesia's police and judiciary.

An investigation by the Herald has confirmed bribes were paid to
ensure Leslie would be released and revealed allegations her positive
blood and urine tests to ecstasy were "doctored".

Promising to "tell all" to clear her name, Leslie plans to attack the
police and the conduct of her case after returning to Australia today.
However, some insiders dismiss Leslie's claims that she was ignorant
of the contents of the two pink pills found in her handbag at the
entrance to an all-night dance party at Bali's Garuda Wisnu Kencana
park in August.

Sons of senior Indonesian officials did accompany Leslie to the party,
police sources say, but they identified a Balinese man, also in the
car when it was stopped outside the dance party, as their ecstasy
supplier.

When she was arrested, Leslie provided the man's mobile phone number
to police and said he would arrange a lawyer for her. When police rang
the number the man denied knowing Leslie, a denial he repeated when
contacted by the Herald. The known drug dealer caters exclusively to
the privileged offspring of Indonesia's elite, who use Bali as a
weekend playground for drugs, parties and sex.

Away from Jakarta's prying eyes, the youngsters take advantage of
Bali's tourist-inspired relaxed moral attitudes. Six young Indonesian
men had accompanied Leslie and her model friends - including "Mia",
who she alleged put the ecstasy in her bag - to Bali and had been
partying for several days before Leslie's arrest.

One person linked to the group said the pills in Leslie's bag were
intended for someone else. Leslie knew what they were, they claimed,
but had forgotten they were in her handbag. When their car was stopped
at 12.30am on August 20, an exercise in damage control was launched.
One man told police he was the son of a senior minister, another is
alleged to be the son of a senior judge.

Their names were not recorded, but a statement was taken from the
alleged driver of the car, Andre Wuisan. The name and his licence
details turned out to be false, and his alleged address in Jakarta was
vacant.

One officer said police agreed to create the driver's false identity
to let the others in the car off the hook. Leslie says she was warned
she would be killed if she revealed the truth.

Money had been paid, the officer said, stating he had received a small
share as he was present at the arrest. More than $100,000 was
distributed between police, judicial figures and others to manufacture
a story that could see Leslie released within three months.

A source close to Leslie's legal team confirmed that bribes had been
paid, but refused to disclose the amounts.

One of Leslie's prosecutors, Suhadi, said the bribery allegations
should be put to police - who were not available for comment.

"We can only work based on what the police have investigated and what
was presented during trial," he said. "Do you want me not to trust
what the police said? If she said something during the trial that's
what we believe as the truth. If now she is saying something else
outside court, that's really her problem; she should have presented
that during the trial. I can only believe what's been presented to me
by police. Everything was by the book. "

Leslie's spokesman, Sean Mulcahy, said all would be revealed, and not
necessarily at a price, this week. Earlier plans for a bidding war to
recover some of Leslie's legal costs could be shelved. "We've had
numerous approaches from people all over the world. I've told every
single one of them to put their proposal and offer in an email and
send it through to me," Mulcahy said. "We haven't suggested any
prices; we certainly haven't finalised any deal."

Through her spokesman, Leslie was last night adamant she still
considered herself a Muslim. Mulcahy said claims she faked her
religious belief were unjust and inaccurate.

"The criticism only hampers her attempt to progress and further her
religion. I can only liken it to learning the piano," he said. "When
you first start playing the piano you are not very good. If people
continually criticise you and tell you how bad you play, you give up.
She doesn't profess to be the greatest Muslim that's lived; she's
learning the religion. There are various levels of religious beliefs
and Michelle doesn't share extremist views of that."

Yesterday's meeting between Leslie and her friend, Siti Namira - whom
Leslie named as Mia to police - must have been tense. During her
trial, Leslie blamed Mia for placing the ecstasy in her handbag and
chastised her for not coming forward to tell the truth.

During two hours at a Singapore cafe, Namira expressed relief at
seeing Leslie safe and free, Mulcahy said. He suggested Namira could
speak publicly on Leslie's behalf. "They were relieved to see each
other; they are friends."

The public would soon learn the truth, Mulcahy said. "We know what
Michelle will be saying, and that is the truth of the matter - not
necessarily for money. The priority of this matter is for Michelle to
clear her name."
