Senior Tunisian opposition leader Chokri Belaid shot dead Al Arabiya With Agencies Senior Tunisian opposition leader, Chokri Belaid, from the left-leaning opposition Democratic Patriots party, was shot dead Wednesday morning, his brother told AFP. "My brother was assassinated. I am desperate and depressed," Abdelmajid Belaid said. The wife of the opposition leader, speaking to Radio Mosaique, said he had been hit by two bullets. Tunisian Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali condemned Belaid's killing, saying it was a political assassination and a blow to the Arab Spring revolution. He said the identity of the killer was unknown. Belaid was shot four times in front of his home in Tunis, according to sources from his Popular Front party. "The murder of Belaid is a political assassination and the assassination of the Tunisian revolution. By killing him they wanted to silence his voice," said Jebali, who heads the government led by the moderate Islamist Ennahda party which won Tunisia's first post-Arab Spring election in 2011.
