Cutbacks to France’s defence budget will see some 20,000 military posts disappear by 2019, according to French media reports. The Ministry of Defence’s white paper, due to be presented to French President François Hollande on Monday, will outline France’s military budget over a five-year period from 2014. According to a report on Sunday by French newspaper Les Echos, it will pave the way for a reduction in personnel across the armed forces at an average of 5,000 posts a year from 2016 to the end of 2019, making for a total of 20,000 job cuts. Les Echos also reported that the white paper confirms that France’s total defence budget will be kept at €179.2 billion a year over the five-year period - in line with an earlier promise by Hollande to freeze military spending at 2013 levels. However, the newspaper claimed that this will in fact translate to a decline in spending in real terms as included within the figures is a €4.5 billion windfall in “exceptional revenue”, gained through the sale of real estate and other sources. A planned cutback in the size of Frances armed forces was initiated by former president Nicolas Sarkozy in 2008, who called for 54,000 military jobs to be axed between 2008 and 2015.
