Many dead and injured in Pakistan bomb attack At least 15 people killed and dozens injured after explosion at a Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam rally in Kurram Agency. Last Modified: 06 May 2013 12:37 At least 15 people have been killed and dozens injured after an explosion during a rally in Kurram Agency for a Pakistan political party. Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam candidate Munir Orakzai is thought to have survived the bomb attack, which happened on Monday. A government administrator for the remote region where the explosion took place said at least 50 people were injured in the attack, but that two party leaders escaped unhurt. Al Jazeera's Kamal Hyder, reporting from Islamabad, said the blast was unusual because the JUI is considered to be supportive of the Afghan Taliban's fight with the United States, as well as being sympathetic to the Pakistani Taliban. "We expect high casualties to be reported from this attack as this is a very remote region," our correspondent said. "The attack took place when the rally was in full swing, and authorities say it was a planted device, which is why the casualty figures are so high. "What surprising is that this attack was on a religious party, so it will be interesting to see if the JUI was the target or if this was an attempt on Orakzai himself. "There have been attacks on other, secular, parties, but if the Taliban were to take responsibility for this attack it would prove they are going all out to disrupt the elections."
