HYDERABAD: Jamaat-e-Islami Hind president Dr Mohammed Abdul Haq Ansari on
Saturday asked Muslim women not to confine themselves to family affairs but
go out to the public, and participate in social and political activities
while remaining in the veil.

Addressing women at the inaugural session of the organisation's first woman
conference, Jamaat chief Ansari said making a cup of tea was not the only
job of women in the changing world. "Women should play an important role in
development of the society," he said.

Ansari said that Islam has provided more sops to women than men, but the
meaning of liberty to women was wrongly interpreted by the Western
countries. Rights of women doesn't mean spending time in pubs and night
clubs and ignore the hijab.

"In the name of liberty, women are being sexually exploited and misused for
promotion of brands. But reality is that dogs are given better treatment
than women in the western countries," Ansari said.

The Jamaat chief expressed concern over men preferring only working class
women for marriage. "In our society, marriage of girls is turning difficult
due to dowry and victimisation of women.

This trend is against the teachings of Islam," he said. Speakers at the
Saturday's conference included All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB)
member from Mumbai Uzma Nahid, Professor from Bihar Shahnaz Begum, Jamaat's
women's state wing chief Nasira Khanam and national vice-president of the
Jamaat Jalaluddin Ansar Umri.

The Jamaat on Sunday will be discussing 'Role and responsibilities of Muslim
women in building the Indian society', 'Role of Muslim women in the
advancement of education among Muslims', 'Role of women in eradication of
dowry system', 'The persecuted Indian women: Facts, reasons and the rescuer.
